Black Heroism — Honoring Captain Paris Davis

Today, our blog honors a great hero, Captain Paris Davis, one of the first black officers in the Special Forces of the United States Army who was repeatedly nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War, yet was ignored for many years up to the present. We recommend that you read this article for it speaks for itself — it is a powerful illustration of bias toward a marginalized individual. His valor was so astronomical that it is a great illustration of the harmful power of marginalizing anyone. 56 years after the heroic event and many nominations, he is finally being considered for the award. He is a proud and humble man and states he never felt a victim — "he downplayed the significance of all this stuff, medals and all that.” Marginalized people can often downplay their hurt and even trauma.

This story is a validation of the importance of the re-emergence of diversity consulting, known today as DEI Consulting — for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Equity is a timely coaching objective for these days. Our country's founders tried to establish it early on in our nation's history — as all people are created equal — yet, in the past years, many of us have become clear there is far more work to be done to achieve this vital goal. Please read the article and feel free to share it with others as you see fit.
